Wee Willie Winkie.

Image
Wee Willie Winkie. Ben was a little boy who didn’t like to go to bed. ‘It is eight o’ clock, you must go to bed,’ said his mother one summer night. ‘I wish I could be a fairy and play in the garden at night.’ Said Ben. Hush! Hush! Here is Wee Willie Winkie to see Ben. ‘Come with me,’ he said ‘I will show you what  I have to do to night.’ Off went Ben with Willie. What fun they had running through the town in their night gowns.   They went up-stairs and down-stairs sending boys and girls to bed. What fun they had rapping at the windows and shouting at the locks. ‘What a bother boys and girls are if they do not got to bed by eight o’ clock,’ said Willie. ‘I cannot go back to fairy land until they go to bed.’ ‘Oh!’ said Ben. ‘I must be a bother to you.’  running through the town. The Wicked Lion.

Image
The Wicked Lion. A lion became weak with old age. He couldn’t hunt for his prey. So he pretended to be sick and lay down in his den. Then he asked for someone to come and clean his house. The beasts heard his request and though they didn’t feel much love for the lion, they pretended to be loyal and came to see him. As they entered one by one, the lion made morsels of them and grew fat upon this diet. The fox had stayed away suspecting that the old lion was faking. At last he came to ask after the health of king of the jungle standing at some distance from the lion’s cave. He asked ‘how are you, your majesty?’ ‘Ah! My dear friend,’ said the lion. ‘Why do you stand so far away from me? I am rather deaf and can only hear you if you speak near my ear.’ ‘May God give you long life,’ said the fox. ‘But excuse me, I see all the footsteps pointing towards your house but none going outwards. So farewell dear friend.’ I see all the footsteps pointing towards your h...

Dickery, a brave mouse. Dickery is a little mouse. He lives in a snug nest with his father, mother and twin sisters in the larder. ‘Puss would like to catch me.’ He said to his mother, ’but he cannot. I am too clever.’ ‘Oh, my dear! Puss is clever too and he will catch you if you jump off this shelf.’ But Dickery forgot what his mother said and he set off to see the rest of the house. He came to the landing and saw a big grand-father clock. Dickery went to sniff it. What a clever thing it was! It said, ‘Dick, dock, Dickery, dock.’    ‘oh!’ said Dickery. ‘That is my name.’ So he ran up the clock. Just then the clock said ‘whirr!’ and struck one big ting. What a start he got! Down he ran as fast as he could and with a big jump landed back on the shelf.  Now when he says that he is going to do clever things his sisters scoff and sing: He came to the landing and saw a big grand-father clock.         ...
